Differences Between the G2 and G3

There are lots of similarities in how both the devices work. However, the Waterdrop G3 is an improved version of Waterdrop G2. Both are the same in terms of how they work but Waterdrop G2 is based on two composite filters, while Waterdrop G3 is based on three. This gives the Waterdrop G3 models a higher filtration performance and higher maximum water flow. The new WD-G3P800-W is 3 times more efficient than the original G2 and it can produce twice as much filtered water per day.

Differences Between the G2 and G3

Main Features and Benefits

The Waterdrop G3 and G2 are both advanced faucet water filters. They have a compact size that can fit almost all sink sizes, an advanced integrated electrical circuit for reduced leakage, and the visual filter life indicator which allows you to see how long your filter will last without having to open it up.

Tankless Design

The Waterdrop G2 and G3 series water filters have integrated filters making them some of the most compact reverse osmosis water filters on the market. Their tankless design also means there is no bulky water storage tank taking up extra space under the sink.

Safety Features

The water connections and electrics are all integrated into the unit, reducing the risk of leakage, preventing potential expensive damage to kitchen cabinets.

Audible Filter Replacement Reminder

Both G2 and G3 have visual LED lights that alert you to when your water filters are getting close to their replacement stage. Light blue for a new filter, purple indicates the filters are nearing the end of their life, and red means that the filters are needing to be replaced. The unit will also give off an audible beeping sound to alert you that the filters need to be replaced. This is a fantastic feature because if you are anything like me if it is out of sight, it is out of mind, but it is hard to ignore a warning sound.

Waterdrop G2 vs G3 Water Waste Ratio

An often-overlooked factor when buying a reverse osmosis filter is the water waste ratio. All RO filters waste some water, it is just the way they work and it can’t be avoided. However, the ratio varies depending on which unit you choose.

The original Waterdrop G2 had a very high water waste ratio of 1:1 meaning that every glass of water that it delivered it would waste the same amount of water.

Waterdrop has since improved the waste ratio on later models, the G2P600 has a 2:1 ratio and the Waterdrop G3P800 has an impressive 3:1 pure water to waste ratio, delivering 3 glasses of pure water and only wasting one.

Filter Replacement

The Waterdrop G2 and G3 have easy-to-change filters, according to Waterdrop they can be changed in 3 seconds. To replace that you simply twist, remove and replace, twisting to secure in place.

Additional Features of G3

Besides the additional water filter cartridge, there are two other main features that set the G3 apart.

Smart Faucet

The G3 features a smart faucet with integrated LED light alerting you to the filter life, making it just that little bit easier to see when you need to replace the cartridges.

Total Dissolved Solids indicator

Another feature of the Waterdrop G3 is the digital TDS display, so you can monitor not only the life of your filters but now it is also easy to see the water quality in real-time.

Pros and Cons of the G2 and G3

The Waterdrop G3 series filters out 99.9% of contaminants and wastes far less water than its predecessor the G2. The new G3P800 also delivers twice the amount of water per minute.

Only the G2MNR has remineralization included, and none of the G3 models come with a remineralization stage, thankfully it is easy and cheap to add the Waterdrop Remineralization Filter to the system.

Waterdrop G2 Filtration Process

The water drop G2 series has two filter cartridges that provide 5 stages of filtration. The first filter is the WD-G2CF composite pre-sediment and carbon filter. This filter removes dust, rust, and other non-dissolved particles. The carbon filter removes smells, tastes and chlorine.

The second filter is the WD-G2P6MRO which is the multi-stage reverse osmosis filter. This filter uses multiple stages to.

Further removes solids in the first stage, then has a 0.0001-micron reverse osmosis membrane that effectively reduces dissolved solids and heavy metal contaminants such as lead, salt, pharmaceuticals, fluoride, nitrates.

Waterdrop G2 Filtration Process

The post-activated carbon block is made from coconut husk carbon, and further reduces bad tastes and smells while improving taste.

The last PET pleated membrane serves as the last defense against large particles that may have made their way through the other stages.

The Waterdrop G2 filters out up to 90% of contaminants.

Waterdrop G3 Filtration Process

The Waterdrop G3 uses 3 separate filters that give 7 stages of filtration. In the G3 there is the WD-G3-N1CF, the WD-G3-N2RO (WD-G3P800-N2RO in the G3P800) and WD-G3-N3CB

The first filter is the WD-G3-N1CF which is similar to the G2 setup, but it has a double cotton filter with an activated carbon block filter sandwiched between them. It removes, solids, odors, and bad tastes from the water.

Unlike the G2 filters, the G3 models use a larger dedicated RO filter cartridge (WD-G3-N2RO), that will last 2 years with regular use.

Waterdrop G3 Filtration Process

If you decide to go for the G3P800 then you will get the WD-G3P800-N2RO, it does the same thing but as far as we can tell it allows for much higher flow, and lower waste it is this filter cartridge that enables the G3P800 to achieve a water waste ratio of 3:1.

Where the G2 models have an integrated RO and carbon filter, the G3 models use a dedicated Carbon filter (WD-G3-N3CB) to achieve much higher levels of toxin removal and a superior smell and taste.

Overall the G3 models have a far better filtration system than the Early G2 models.

G2 and G3 Waterdrop Reverse Osmosis System Installation Comparison

All of the Waterdrop G series undersink water filters are simple to install, all water fittings are simple push and clip style. You will need to drill a few holes to connect the waste water pipe to the drain, and to attach the faucet to the top of the sink. But overall these are both very simple units to install as a DIY installer.

Watch the Video below to see for yourself how simple the install is.

Maintenance of the G2 and G3 Waterdrop Reverse Osmosis Systems

All the Waterdrop Filters are very easy to maintain, they are self-flushing and come with easy to view monitors that let you know when you need to change the filters, and filters are so simple to change you could get a 5 year old to do it. So once installed all you really need to do is change the filters when the lights tell you to do so, and that is it.

Final Verdict: Waterdrop G3 is the Clear Winner

After comparing the features of the Waterdrop G2 models and the Waterdrop G3 models, we can say that if price is not an issue then the Waterdrop G3P800 is the best choice. It is a powerful, compact under sink water filter that is as good as much more expensive, more complicated units.

But if you are budget conscious we recommend the Waterdrop G2P600 because it has a better water waste ratio and can produce more water than the G3, and it is considerably cheaper. However, it is not going to remove as many impurities, but this is not going to be a real issue for most households on average quality municipal water.
